Help Me Want the Healer

There have been a lot of songs lately with the message that we need to trust that God is on our side even when things don’t work out the way we hoped. Mercy Me sings, “I know You’re able, and I know You can…but even if you don’t, my hope is You alone.” Hillary Scott sings about trying to understand why her broken heart is a part of God’s plan, and yet “…sometimes I gotta stop, remember that You’re God and I am not, so Thy will be done.”

Jesus is healing in our scripture this Sunday, and people are skeptical of His power. They think it’s ridiculous that He felt a woman touch Him to be healed when a large crowd is pressing in on Him, and they laugh when He says Jairus’ daughter is only sleeping after they saw her die. Jesus focuses on the faith of both Jairus who asked for His help, and the woman who knew she would be healed if she could just touch His cloak. Their faith was the power that brought about healing!

When I am at my wit’s end and the answer isn’t provided, frequently my last resort is to pray for God’s will. When I’ve tried everything else and the hurt remains, asking for God to take over instead of forcing my own will brings the peace that begins healing. My favorite song that describes this is when Natalie Grant sings, “help me want the Healer more than the healing, help me want to Savior more than the saving, help me want the Giver more than the giving. Help me want You, Jesus, more than anything.”

I believe that is what Jesus tried to show us when he was healing people: not to believe because He healed, but to be healed because we believe.
