Conflict/Peace

Those who know me (even just a little) can probably guess that I am not a fan of conflict. I like to look on the bright side of things, see the good in people and situations, and help others do the same. I’m actually surprised to find myself writing about it, as conflict is something I intentionally avoid whenever possible.

And yet conflict is a part of life. We have the ability to escalate or diffuse it, use it as a tool to divide or unite, and resent or celebrate our differences. Tone of voice, facial expression, body language, word choice – everything we use to communicate can send conflict in a positive or negative direction.

We will spend the next several weeks talking about God’s grace and mercy – through conflict, forgiveness, and love for all. In this world where judging abounds, shouldn’t we all take a step back and remember that as Christians we are to spread the good news, bless and forgive? Because when all else fails, we know that we are not in the position to judge others, but to love and care for each other.

Jesus gives us some specifics in Matthew 18 on how we are to grow in relationship through conflict. Try it this week: turn up the heat, deal with the underlying problem, walk in each other’s shoes…then relish in a closer bond with others after conflict is handled with grace and mercy. Let there be peace.

In Christ’s love,

Heather Lewis
