Dear Salem Family,

I am blessed to work with many different people and many different ministries as a part of my work here at Salem. I get to work with families, individuals, service and outreach groups and other organizations. It is something different every day and I love being able to work with this community.

In staff meeting this week, we discussed the Christmas Sunday reading in John chapter 1. John is a hard gospel to understand, and you really have to read it intentionally and slowly to grasp the ideas he’s trying to convey. The verses that stuck out to me were 7 and 8. John 1: 7-8 “He came as a witness to testifyconcerning that light, so that through him all might believe.8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.” He describes perfectly that we are not the light; we are a witness to Christ’s light.

I love this reminder especially at this time of year. It feels great to help others and many people think about that more around Christmas. But, I am reminded that I am not the light. I am showing Christ’s love and light through my actions. I do these things, and seek to help others as a Christ follower.

I see that in the Salem community and organizations connected with our community. There have been so many hands helping in providing food for Pantry Pack and Christmas boxes. The Pantry Pack team has helped organize and provide food. Individual members have provided funds, food and boxes. Boy Scout and Cub Scout troops have provided food. Congregation members will provide assistance during our Advent service to pack the boxes for us to provide to the clients at Pantry Pack. These boxes are packed with so much love.

I see Christ’s light in all of those helping in this ministry. This season isn’t always a happy season for people, they are reminded of what or who they don’t have. And being able to show Christ’s light in the midst of that, is a great honor. This community is amazing and I’m so blessed to be a part.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year,

Meghan Harmison
Director of Adult Ministries and Outreach
