Salem friends and family,

I was blessed to partake in packing Thanksgiving bags with some great people this past Wednesday. Kids and adults came together to pack food for those that face food insecurity. After we packed the bags, we all sat down and discussed food insecurity and what it means to pack the bags. The kids had some great responses about feeling happy that they were able to help, tired because it was hard work and feeling thankful that many of them have what they need.

Last night reminded me of advocacy. What do you think of, when you think of advocacy? I think about speaking for the voiceless, standing with those who need support, and being the change that might not otherwise happen. Over the last week, I’ve been reminded that advocacy is active support. And adults are not the only ones that can be advocates. Watching the kids and talking with them about what it might be like to not have food, they wanted to actively support those without. They were actively supporting by packing the bags, and actively supporting by working to understand why they were participating.

The community we are a part of are great advocates in the truest sense of the word. I see active support everywhere I look. I see Christ’s love in that active support. That doesn’t mean we have to agree on everything, but that means we can actively support, have honest conversation and continue to love as a community. I challenge you to think about how you are being an advocate, how are you actively supporting and showing Christ’s love?

Peace to you friends,
