Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

There are many people in my life who love to make homemade bread. My friend bakes with her 3 young daughters to share her excitement of creating and eating, and experimenting with ingredients. My uncle takes out his frustrations on the dough as he punches and kneads. My mom makes sweet bread coffee cake for Christmas morning. My friend who homeschooled her 7 children would make an extra loaf of simple white bread (usually just out of the oven and oh, so delicious,) bringing it to my house when she brought a few of her kids over for piano lessons.

Is there any smell as comforting as baking bread? I cannot resist a fresh slice with melted butter! My friend with 7 children said she had her best family conversations on bread baking day, as her kids sat around the table eating and sharing. Jesus said, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” I like to think of Jesus as the staple food in our lives that isn’t showy, but feeds us when we are spiritually hungry.

Jesus uses bread in his ministry so much, from feeding 5,000 to breaking bread with his disciples in the upper room. He reveals himself after his resurrection when he breaks bread, and I believe he reveals himself to us when we take communion, if we are listening to His voice.

This week, may you be filled with Jesus’ holy words, and break bread with others to spread Christ’s joy.

In Christ’s love,

Heather Lewis
