That Little Voice

Do you sometimes have the feeling that you are supposed to do something a certain way? Some people call it a sixth sense, listening to your inner voice, following your gut, even something mystical or psychic that is leading us in the right direction. Do you listen and follow? When you don’t, do you later wish you had?

I have a very specific memory of a time I chose not to listen. I had a feeling I was supposed to help someone whose life was full of drama, and I fought against it with the idea that I didn’t even know her last name to be able to find her. I was driving as I wrestled with the thought, and then at a stoplight I looked to my left and remembered her name — it was on a sign for an apartment building. Whoa!!

Usually that little voice is not so insistent, is it? It seems to be more of a gentle nudging to do the right thing, or an alarm when you’re doing the wrong thing. Do you think you’d be more willing to follow if you thought it was God’s voice?

This Sunday we will celebrate Pentecost, the birthday of the church. Jesus promised His disciples that although he would no longer be with them, he would send an Advocate — the Holy Spirit — who would always be with them and guide them in His name. And although sometimes I struggle with the message, I have found that following that inner voice brings blessings to my life and others. I encourage you to trust it, and follow.
