Dear Salem family,

Advent is here! Our first Sunday in Advent was filled with the energy of visitors and two sweet babies being baptized in the late service, advent candle lightings, happy Thanksgiving hugs, and new music encouraging us to invite Jesus into our world.

I love how the music of Advent talks about what is coming: O Come O Come Emmanuel, Come Thou Long Expected Jesus, Even So Come, Come Child of Light – we sang all of these on Nov 27. They all invite Jesus to come – into our hearts and into our lives. In four short weeks we will sing O Come All Ye Faithful, inviting each other to Bethlehem to come and adore Him. I love the transition from “come to us, Jesus” to Jesus saying “come to Me.”

Speaking of adoring babies, it is so fun to watch your faces in the congregation during baptisms! And this week we had double the smiles and sighs. Perhaps that is why Jesus came as a baby, to teach us to adore? How easy it is to adore a sweet baby! And what hope we feel for the future as we gaze at a sweet little one. Many of you know I just returned from a trip to Washington DC as my beloved grandmother was laid to rest in Arlington. The trip was filled with friends and family reliving memories from her amazing life of 99 ½ years, and the biggest joy was loving her 2 month old great granddaughter. She was born weeks after Gamilee died, was named after her and brought such comfort and joy to all of us.

As we prepare to come to the manger this season, let us be comforted in the promise that He comes to bring us light in the darkness. O come, let us adore Him!

In Christ’s love,

Heather Lewis
