Salem Family,

A quote I heard when studying St. Francis of Assisi in Italy my Junior year of college has been on my mind lately. “The deeds you do may be the only sermon some persons will hear today.”

I have been reflecting on what church means to me and why I come to church. I feel refreshed after Sunday morning, I feel like I’ve been challenged and I feel like I’ve been pushed to go and do. And then I think to myself, what about those that don’t know Jesus, don’t have a community where they are refreshed, or the only church community they know has condemned or judged them?

Then, I think about this quote. How are my actions the only sermon someone might hear today? How am I showing hope to someone who may be hopeless? How am I showing love to the other? The old adage, action speaks louder than words, is a great quote. But, when I think about the words of St. Francis, it speaks to the theology behind the actions. I choose to live my life for Christ and because I have chosen that I want to show Christ through my actions. But, it is because of Him that I have life. That, I believe is the difference. I want my actions to speak, because of my love for Christ and I want His love to speak through me.

I want my deeds to be the sermon someone hears today. Whether that’s love, hope, faith or even a challenge, I want to show Christ to those around me. I challenge you to think about that quote this week. There will be a time that your actions will be the only sermon someone will hear that day. Keep that in mind as you are interacting with those you don’t know and even those you do.

In Christ’s Love,
