Dear Salem family,

While Pastor Dave was on sabbatical last summer, the staff wrote letters that were mailed out weekly. I was honored to be a part of this ministry, and as I prepared to write this week’s letter, I stumbled on the first one I wrote in June, 2015. We happened to be focusing on the same story we read last Sunday, the parable of the mustard seed. I love how a year later, Salem is still focusing on nourishing faith in each of us! Here’s a part of that letter:

Many of you know that I have three kids in elementary school. I’m always surprised (and thrilled!) when little conversations show that they really do hear what’s happening during the service on Sunday. At dinner after Holy Trinity Sunday we were talking about how flowers grow, and someone piped up “Water, sun and Holy Spirit!” and giggles erupted.

It is our hope that every message from Salem is a positive reinforcement of the Word of God, and gives you relevant and inspirational thoughts for daily life. This week Jesus gives us his parable of the mustard seed. The idea that faith is planted in each of us with the ability to grow without limitation is awesome to me! Everything we do and say gives the opportunity to grow our faith, and the faith of those around us.

I’ll never forget when I was a new high school vocal music teacher, realizing that I had the ability to positively or negatively impact the way my students felt about music. Soon after, it was made very clear to me that people (especially teenagers) don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. Especially when sharing our faith, caring for others nourishes their own seed of faith beyond any knowledge or insight we may have to give.

I hope your week brings caring opportunities that nourish your faith, and allows you to share it with others.

In Christ’s love,

Heather Lewis
