Dear Salem Community,

Oasis started last week and it was a great night filled with community, fellowship and worship. Seeing the community gather for a meal and talk with their friends was life giving. Hearing all of those participating talk about their experiences in small groups was exciting. Participating in worship and hearing the community’s joys and concerns, praying as a community and singing together was a refreshing way to end my night and begin the last half of the week.

I wrote earlier this summer about the word community. I talked about all of the communities we as Salem are a part of and the Salem community itself. As I watched this past week at Oasis, Sunday worship and New Mission Partner exploration, I was reminded that to be in community is to matter. Much of our significance comes in our relationship with others and our relationship with God. To be in community is to recognize our need for each other and exhibit care for each other and readily forgive each other while holding each other accountable, these things make communities better.

I see that happening here at Salem. Grace, mercy, forgiveness and care. Communities go through good times and tough times. But, when grace, mercy, forgiveness and care are a part of that community, they are able to walk through the tough times together. I have learned so much from being a part of this community and I am excited to continue see what this community does in the future and how we will continue to affect each other in many ways.

Peace to you,

Meghan Harmison (Director of Adult Ministries and Outreach)
