Hey Salem Community-

Growing up in Minnesota, the sport of hockey was integrated in to all aspects of community. Every park had an outdoor ice rink and every city had an indoor ice arena. All the kids in my neighborhood would meet at the local park and play hockey from the time we got home from school until our parents called us in for dinner. We played all day on Saturday and after church on Sunday. I practically grew up on skates and played the game from the time I was five until my junior year in high school. Hockey was just part of the culture in Minnesota and the reason it’s called the State Of Hockey.

As I reflect back on the reason I got involved in hockey, it always points back to opportunity and community. I remember the day my dad came home and surprised me with my first hockey stick and puck at age five. I immediately went out in our driveway to practice and nearly shattered a window in my parents car. Shortly there after, my parents asked me if I wanted to play in our metro wide hockey league. I was so excited I could hardly wait for the first practice to start. My parents described those first practices as “coast and crash” because we would get up a little speed, loose control, and crash into the boards or another player. Over the years our skills progressed as did the opportunities and support we received from the amazing coaches and families in the league. Those relationships and opportunities kept us connected in community for many years to come.

We have some amazing students here at Salem! They are full of positive energy and have incredible gifts to share. I have worked with many congregations over the years but none compare to Salem when it comes to youth leadership opportunities. Not only do our students lead in all aspects of the life of this church, but we also work hard to support and mentor them as they grow in their gifts. Opportunity and support are critical to engage young people in Christ community.

On Sunday, September 25th, you will have an opportunity to experience worship lead by our middle school and senior high students. This is one of many opportunities you will have this year to walk with our young people and share in Christ community. I want to encourage everyone to take the time to pray for our students and engage them in conversation and relationship throughout the year.

Healthy congregations create safe and welcoming space where young people feel accepted and connected. The children are more than just our future, they are our leaders and inspiration today.
